Mary Lou Fielder Mallory Cannon

Welcome to the past 45 years of my life!!!!

Walking down memory lane is not something I do often, but perhaps it will be a good exercise for me.  Actually, I’m more of a “here and now, enjoy the moment, one day at a time” kind of gal!  Will offer a short, “just the facts, M’am”, version for those of you who:   A. Really don’t have time to spare and just want to hit the highlights.  B. Really don’t care or need to know more. C.  Really don’t remember who the heck Mary Lou Fielder is!   For those who would like more details, I’ll offer a longer version!

1999

SHORT VERSION
Happily married to Bob Cannon of Salisbury, MD. (class of ‘54), since 3/6/97.  Lived in MD since ‘70.  Our address on the eastern shore of MD, thirty minutes from the ocean! is: 27091 S. Tourmaline Dr., Hebron, MD. 21830 or email Bobaloucan@aol.com.  Proud mother of three grown children and “Grammy or Mimi” to four special teenage grandchildren, with another grand on the way.   Son, Jim, married, in Seoul, S. Korea, expecting their first child any day now!  Daughter, Maureen, married, in CA, has Michael & Mallory.  Son, Miles, married, in DE has Chad & Ashley.  Bob has two grown children and two young g’children, all out of the area.  I worked as a Registered Nurse after graduating Nursing School in ‘74 until an early retirement from the state in ‘96; primarily working in the field of Mental Health, w/the chronically mentally ill.  Bob also worked w/the mentally ill, in a community Rehab Center and retired in ‘98.  He and I enjoy many activities together......square-danced  for a few years, still love to jitterbug!, gardening, RVing in our little  24'  Winnebago motor home, “Bobalou”, with our Korean dog “Bijou”, walking & biking for exercise(not nearly enough) and now this new “toy”, our computer.  Bob is a sports card  collector and a collector in general, of anything else that I don’t throw out!!  We attend the Presbyterian Church and I do a little volunteer work there.  Guess that just about does it for my factual, “short version”.....truly looking forward to seeing everyone at the Reunion....hope we have a big turnout.  Will be checking my email frequently and hope to hear “You’ve got mail”, from one of you guys....I promise to reply.  Until then.......YEA GREENIES!!!!                  Lou
Keep scrolling, for those who chose the LONG VERSION !!!!   Guess I’ll begin after our ‘54 graduation....off to the “W” for my freshman year with two great roomies........Betsy Rodgers and Jean White.  Of course, Betsy and I were both “spoken for”....she to Pickett and I to Jimmy Mallory.  Jean was a free agent!!  We did have a fun year.  I completed my second year, then decided that my summer job at Waterways, which was then being offered to me as a full-time job was just too tempting.......I was actually getting a paycheck, which seemed big at the time!  Decided not to return to college.....Jimmy and I would get married, I would work full-time to help him thru college, live at home with my parents, Jimmy would return to MSC for his second year and visit me on the weekends!  Only took us a week or two after our wedding in Dec. ‘56 to realize this weekend stuff just wasn’t going to work out.  I quit my job, we moved to Columbus, I worked at the “W” until #1 baby was on the way.  We later moved over to West Point, MS, until Jimmy graduated as a 2nd Lt. in the Army and by then we had baby #2.  Our Army life was interesting and eventful, but I’ll spare you the details.  We moved  a lot.......  GA,MD,NC,back to MD,MS,(Vicksburg for me and the kids--Jimmy to Viet Nam ‘64-65),back to MD, then Jimmy made the difficult decision to get out of the service in’66 and we were civilians again.  By then, baby #3 had arrived. More moving........TN,GA, then back to MD in ‘70 where Jimmy found his “niche”, a  job in Salisbury working for the state as Coordinator of Programs for Recovering Alcoholics.  I’ve been here ever since.......although   I’ve made six more moves since living in Salisbury........ I do enjoy decorating and sewing curtains, but think it’s time to put down some roots..... I don’t think I have another move in me!!!!  Fortunately, up to ‘70, I had been able to be a full-time homemaker and enjoyed every minute of it.  However, I was beginning to feel the need to have something outside the family to give me an identity, so I reached back to a childhood dream of being a nurse and began my studies.  The Nursing School actually accepted some of my old credits from the “W”, allowing me to finish in 3 yrs.  Graduated, with honors, at age 38, in ‘74.  Jimmy and our three children had been a tremendous help and support.  Thus began my nursing career......some general hospital duty for a while, an internist’s office nurse for a year, then the state offered me a job at our local Health Dept.  Had always wanted to be a Community Health Nurse......making home visits, getting involved w/families re health issues.etc.  Eventually began working w/the persistently mentally ill.......folks that I care  about so much and who have been so misunderstood and unfairly stigmatized.  But........that’s another whole issue!!

In Feb. of ‘80, after 2 4 years of marriage, Jimmy decided we would be happier apart.  He was right........after I dealt with the initial shock and hurt.  We were separated for a year (MD law), and divorced in March of ‘81.  He is now happily married, to another nurse, retired and living about 30 miles away in Berlin, MD.  Some of you V’burg folks may have seen him when he returned there to complete his military career and retire.  I, as you now know, have found my soul-mate........an intelligent, interesting, humorous guy, who makes me laugh and loves me unconditionally. Even does his own ironing!!!.........what more could a gal want!!!!  Bob and I actually lived together for 15 years, then decided we’d had enough of a trial run and “jumped over the broom”, as he  says, March ‘97.  As you can imagine, we unfortunately don’t get to see enough of our children and grandchildren since we are so scattered, but we visit as often as possible, keep the phone lines busy and now have email!!  I plan another trip to Korea, in Sept., after the baby comes and I’m headed to CA for my first grandson’s graduation from highschool June 22. Both my parents are gone.......Daddy died in ‘77, age 71, and my dear Mom, in ‘92 at age 83, here in Salisbury, w/Alzheimers.  You may remember my sister, Drue, class of ‘51, married Jesse Joy, class of’48.  They have been in AZ for many years.  Sadly, Jesse (Col.Ret.) died suddenly at home with a heart attack Dec. 22, ‘97. He was buried in Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors. What a moving ceremony for all of us.  Drue is still in AZ, as well as 4 of her 5 children (one in FL).  She has 6 grandchildren. We get together as often as we can.
It’s way past time for a finale..........thanks for sticking w/me to the end, but remember I had 45 years to cover!!!!  Will close w/an open invitation to any  who may travel our way onto the lovely Delmarva Peninsula (look it up on the map!).............Y’all Come........just give us a call first......(410)749-0782........’cause we may be roaming in “Bobalou”!  Will include a few pics of Bob and me.  Sorry I don’t have a recent “family” group picture.......can’t ever get us all together in one place!!  I’ll bring my “bragging” album in Oct.!!
